  • The Possibility of Introduce New Mobility Services toward Reducing Car-Dependent Tourism Reviewed

    Tomonori YOSHIMURA, Jun MITERA

    JSTE Journal of Traffic Engineering   9 ( 4(特集号A) )   A_120 - A_127   2023.4

     More details

In this study, we surveyed Sakai City and Awara City, tourist destinations with a focus on history and culture in Reihoku region of Fukui Prefecture. Specifically, we conducted research on the potential for reducing car-dependent tourism. The results suggest that visitors who use public transportation tend to spend approximately 1.3 times longer
per day and spend more than those who use cars. Furthermore, we found respondents would be willing to use a new mobility service that 62.0% if it introduced shared bicycles and 47.5% if it introduced E-scooter sharing. In addition, it is revealed that car-using visitors were significantly more willing to use the E-scooter sharing than public transportation. The findings of this study will assist in the consideration of measures to support transportation in regional cities with high car dependence and measures to restore tourism, which supports the local economy. We intend to conduct a more in-depth study in the future.

Proceedings of the City Planning Institute of Japan, Chubu Branch   35   17 - 22   2024.9

     More details

This study created linear landscape diagrams using image data from 1961, 1987, and 2024 to analyze the landscape changes along the Fukui Railway line. Focusing on the Fukui Railway area, the research shows how the relationship between urban and rural areas has changed over time, quantitatively evaluating these changes. The linear landscape diagrams examine the impact of urban development on regional landscapes and contribute to sustainable urban landscapes and restoration efforts, providing important guidelines for future urban planning and landscape preservation. The analysis revealed that building area increased by 39.6%, while agriculture area decreased by 37.6%. Notably, the rate of change in building area was 0.44 km² per year between 1961 and 1974, decreasing to 0.22 km² per year between 1974 and 2024. Changes in topography and land use clearly illustrated the transformation of landscapes in the railway areas due to urbanization and the reduction of agriculture area. Utilizing linear landscape diagrams enables planned railway development while considering the conservation of the natural environment.

     More details

Much of the pavement in Japan utilizes the same space for pedestrians and bicycle users. Accidents have increased by 4.5 times in the past ten years. The Japanese government has designated 98 areas as Bicycle-Friendly Model Areas. In this study, we try to understand through a survey the relationship between the passing position of pedestrians and bicycle users by improvement of the pavement environment and we observe the passing positions of each. The investigation area is two Bicycle-Friendly Model Areas in Shiga, and the investigation types are the pole separation type, the fence separation type, and the visual separation type. As a result, we consider that the fence separation type is effective build for both pedestrians and bicycle users from the three types. However we consider that the pole separation type may be desirable when we consider the risk of separation structure built continually and the rate of actual application.
