  • The impact of teaching a graphical programming language before character-based programming on Japanese university students' programming understanding Reviewed International journal

Masahiro Osogami, Kazumasa Ohkuma, and Christopher Pirotto

    SN Social Sciences, Springer   Vol.4 ( No.17 )   1 - 18   2024.1

     More details

In this paper, we propose a smooth transition from GUI to CUI for continuous programming learning, which is considered to be the next step of introductory education of GUI programming, and evaluate the effectiveness of learning in GUI prior to learning in CUI.
As a result, it was found that prior GUI learning increased students' understanding of concepts such as transformation specifications, operators, conditional branching and nesting, among others, in programming learning in CUI, and it was also found that the best method for the smooth transition from GUI to CUI was to learn only in the GUI-based environment and then move to the CUI-based environment, rather than to learn in several environments at the same time.

     More details

In this paper, we propose a method for transitioning smoothly from the GUI environment to the CUI environment for continuous learning in programming education, and discuss its effectiveness by analyzing the results of an hourly comprehension survey. The results of the trial are discussed based on the analysis of the questionnaire results of the hourly comprehension survey.
As a result, we confirmed the effectiveness of prior GUI learning for each GUI and CUI content corresponding to each unit, although there were some exceptions in the GUI learning conducted before the CUI.

    The International Journal of Engineering Education   Vol.33 ( Num.2(A) )   575 - 587   2017.4

     More details

In this paper, we examine the difference in the educational effect of checking the movements of a robot controlled by an actual robot and checking the movements of a robot on a computer display, based on the results of a questionnaire analysis.
The environment used was Scratch, which allows programming without much awareness of syntax, and we divided the testing into two parts: checking the movements only in Scratch and checking the movements of the actual robot linked to the movements created in Scratch.
The results showed that the programming learning with the actual robot control was more effective in the educational effect.

     More details

In this study, we propose a programming material for controlling actual robots using Scratch developed at MIT. By using actual robots and Scratch, it is possible to eliminate the steps of program syntax learning, and also to learn algorithms that are more important for programming education. Additionally, we could show the improvement of learning effects through questionnaire analysis results of high school students' experience in lessons using this material.

     More details

We developed a prototype of a programming learning material using a programming environment called Scratch, which is accompanied by control of an actual robot, and report on the evaluation of the developed material based on the results of a questionnaire analysis conducted during a programming introduction class using the material.
In this class, we not only provide algorithm-oriented programming education by using Scratch, which allows students to program while visually understanding algorithms, but also give students a sense of accomplishment and increase their interest in information and communication technology by having them control an actual robot using the program they created in the class. The results showed that the use of Scratch not only provides algorithm-oriented programming education, but also gives students a sense of accomplishment and increases their interest in information and communication technology.
