Papers

  • On the Relationship between Local Resources and Narrative in Film Nobuhiko Obayashi's Film "The Girl Leapt Though Time" as a Case Study Reviewed

    Noriko Takahashi, Yoichi Kawashima

    Environmental Art and Design   ( 30 )   103 - 110   2023.7

     More details

As a case study to examine the relationship between local resources and stories in films, this paper analyzes "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" (1983), a masterpiece by filmmaker Nobuhiko Obayashi, who has shot a lot of masterpiece films set in regional cities. The purpose of this study is to clarify how local resources were introduced and expressed in the story during the three-step production process of the original novel, screenplay, and film. The original novel and screenplay are texts, and in comparing them with the final stage of the film, I proposed a methodology for film research that uses the screenwriters' techniques of "reverse table" and "reverse scenario" to transcribe (verbalize) the film.

  • On the Design Development of Event Trays Made of Biodegradable Resin Reviewed

    Yohei Murai, Yoichi Kawashima

    Annual Design Review of JSSD   ( 28 )   124 - 129   2023.7

     More details

Sanwa Shokai Co., Ltd. in Fukui Prefecture (later spun off as
NEQAS Co., Ltd) requested us to develop an event tray product in 2021. These trays are used for meals at large outdoor music events popularly held in mountainous areas. The product uses the biodegradable resin based on cellulose acetate, which biodegrades both in soil and water. The product development objective was to create an event tray that addresses environmental issues required by contemporary society. We pursued a shape that would reduce the amount of resin used as much as possible, and finally found a solution that would address both the issues of environmental impact and raw material cost reduction.

  • Attempts and Effects of Narrative Expression in Resional Promotion Film On "out of the blue" as the Fukui City PR Film Reviewed

    Noriko Takahashi, Yoichi Kawashima

    Annual Design Review of JSSD   ( 27 )   46 - 51   2022.3

     More details

The Public Relations Division of Fukui City has established the "Real Localism" project in 2020 with the aim of fostering civic pride by making PR films for inner branding. The aim of this project is to produce films to promote the attractiveness of Fukui City. Two major features of this work, "out of the blue", are that the film does not rely on scenic landscapes, but uses only scenes from ordinary life, and that the film introduces the "storytelling" to depict the characters' emotions and mental landscapes. Furthermore, using local railroad as a backgound, depicted the theme of "Lost and Rebirth that occur in the mundane everyday life" of high school boy and girl using the expression method of "multi-layered time structure". The effectiveness of the expression method of the film and the result of questionnaire survey conducted on 100 residents in Fukui prefecture are discussed and reported in this paper.

     More details

In 2021, the authors collaborated with Sanwa Shokai Co.,Ltd. on the design development of trays foe events under contract with the company. Sanwa Shokai applied for a subsidy from the Fukui prefecture's Growth Industry Challenge Support Project in FY 2021, and the project was selected to Type C. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the design work of the trays for events, to record the development process, and to discuss the authors' reflections on the product using the company's cutting edge technology on biodegradable resin, its product value, form of the trays, and its usability.

  • An Analysis of the Discourse on “Openness” in Housing Works of the 2010s Japan

    Irene Sitompul, Yoichi Kawashima

    Memoirs of Fukui University of Technology   ( 52 )   210 - 221   2022.10

     More details

Openness has been part of Japanese culture since a long time ago. As society and housing culture progress, it might be natural that the concept of openness also develops and changes. To plan the future, we first need to know how thhis concept has been and is currently being used. Therefore, this research aims to understand the application of openness concept in contemporary houses in Japan. Using KH Corder 3, a text mining analysis program, ten years of article texts in Housing Special magazine (Jutakutokushu=jt) are extracted and the co-occurrence networks are analyzed. Projects containing "openness" are analyzed further to find the considerations taken and their common characteristics. The ten years of co-occurrence networks show a general understanding of the use of the most frequent words, while further analysis of projects representing openness concept shows common consideration in the design: an intention to create a relationship with its surroundings.

  • Analysis of Multi-layered Structure of Time in Film On the Movie ”Drive My Car" as a Case Study

    Noriko Takahashi, Yoichi Kawashima

    Memoirs of Fukui University of Technology   ( 52 )   146 - 157   2022.10

     More details

The authors have focused on methodological research on regional promotion films using cinematic techniques that introduce "storytelling". The purpose of this paper is to discuss the "multilayered structure of time" in film work from the perspective of "time-axis design" proposed by Yoshiyuki Matsuoka. In order to verify the validity of the "multi-layered time model" proposed by the authors, this paper analyzes the images of the film "Drive My Car", oscar-winning film, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (original story by Haruki Murakami).
